Getting the async video interview right

▶

The asynchronous video interview — where candidates answer timed questions on camera, at their own pace — saves time on both sides. Badly framed, it mostly produces hollow answers and irritated candidates. A few simple principles change everything.

Fewer questions, better chosen

Five well-targeted questions are worth more than ten generic ones. Each question should test something specific — a technical skill, a real situation, a decision made — rather than simply getting the candidate talking to fill the time.

Calibrating the time limit

Too short (30 seconds) and it is impossible to answer a slightly open question; too long (over three minutes) and it invites rambling. For technical or situational questions, a range of 90 to 120 seconds works well in most cases — and the time limit should be announced before recording, not discovered mid-answer.

Let AI do the first pass, not the final call

Every answer can be transcribed and analysed automatically by The Analyst, question by question: what answers the question well, what lacks detail, what drifts off topic. This first pass saves valuable time before the human interview — but it remains a starting point for the conversation, not an eliminating score.

  • Precise questions rather than generic ones.
  • A time limit announced up front and consistent with the question asked.
  • Automatic transcription and analysis, reviewed before any decision.
